The Stress Reduction Benefits of Reiki

Have You Heard About The Stress Reduction Benefits of Reiki?

Stress Reduction Benefits of Reiki

If you haven’t heard about the stress reduction benefits of Reiki (pronounced… Ray-key), I have all the info you need to begin your indoctrination.

Let’s Start with Defining Reiki:

Reiki is a Japanese form of laying-on-of-hands healing that is administered by a Reiki practitioner – a person trained in this ancient healing art.  Reiki is often called an energy healing modality that treats one’s body, mind and spirit by addressing dis-ease on the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels of human existence.  Its frequency is love. It is gently, subtle, comforting and naturally induces a sense of well-being and deep relaxation, all of which facilitates the stress reduction benefits of Reiki and healing of one’s entire being.

How is a Reiki Session Conducted?

The answer to that question is determined by the client’s needs. First the practitioner needs to determine if the client is wanting a Reiki session because they are 1) dealing with a health issue or 2) if they are seeking a relaxing spa experience.  The answer to that question will determine the protocol for the client’s Reiki session.  Clients dealing with health issues receive a different Reiki protocol and those seeking to experience the stress reduction benefits of Reiki, only.

Typically, the client relaxes on a Reiki or massage table during their session, while the practitioners sits or stands to place their hands on or above the person’s body.  There may be music playing softly in the background to create ambience.  In most instances it is not necessary to disrobe* for your treatment.  Reiki is energy and therefore is capable of penetrating anything. People in full body casts still reap the benefit of Reiki. If the client, due to health constraints, is unable to comfortably lie upon a massage table, Reiki may be administered while the client is seated in a comfortable chair.  My Mom is a Reiki Master and she has conducted Reiki sessions in pre-op surgery, post-op recovery rooms, hospital rooms, nursing homes and patient’s residences.

*The only exception to the ‘no need to disrobe mandate’ would be when receiving a massage by a massage therapist who also happens to be a Reiki practitioner, such as myself.  And… the extra special benefit of a dual-trained massage therapist is you get the Reiki with your massage for the price of your massage!  You might be wondering ‘why?’  Reiki energy flows from a practitioner’s hands the moment they touch someone.  That’s why they should always ask for permission before touching someone.  When you’re a Reiki practitioner/massage therapist there is no way to prevent the Reiki energy from flowing during a massage, it happens naturally.

Description of a “Relaxation” Reiki Session:

While the client relaxes on a massage table the Reiki Practitioner, depending on their training, literally places their hands upon the client’s body in strategic hand positions.  (Do keep in mind some practitioners are trained to hold their hands above the client’s body).  My training is from the traditional Usui Reiki lineage using the ‘hands-on’ method, as taught by Reiki Masters, Denise and John Crundall. **  I was taught to begin each session on the torso of the body, then the head and lastly the back.

Other Reiki Masters teach their students to begin on the head.  There is no right or wrong place to begin a Reiki Session, what’s important is receiving the Reiki energy, experiencing its nurturing, healing benefits and reaping the stress reduction benefits of Reiki in order to promote healing of the body, mind and spirit.

When experiencing a relaxing Reiki session in a spa, your practitioner will typically hold their hands in each hand position, for approximately 5-minutes, on the client’s torso, back and head.  This delivery method is most beneficial in inducing the most common talked about Stress Reduction Benefits of Reiki… deep relaxation, a sense of peace and serenity, enhanced calmness and overall stress reduction.

Description of a “Health Issues” Reiki Session:

If a client is dealing with health issues, be it an illness, disease or chronic pain, I was taught a different delivery method than the one just described.  When a client has a health issue, I have been taught to place my hands upon their body, in the first position on their torso, (below the breasts on the upper rib cage) and to listen to my hands and pay attention to the energy-flow, before moving to the next position.

Reiki practitioners can literally “feel the energy flowing from our hands” when we are giving Reiki.  When the energy stops flowing, then and only then do I move to the next position.  My Reiki Masters teach their students that the Reiki energy knows what the client/patient needs to create a space for healing to occur.  That’s why we let the flow of energy determine how to proceed.  To do otherwise serves the practitioner’s ego, not the health needs of the client/patient.

My Mom, Janice Gibson, worked in a cancer center in Oxnard, California for over seven years as their Reiki Program Coordinator.  She started the Reiki Program at St. John’s Regional Medical Center in 1998.  She taught the Reiki practitioners that volunteer at the Cancer Center that they will more than likely only get 1 or 2, possibly 3 hand positions covered in a 50-minute Reiki session.  This is because the patients are drawing so much energy that the Reiki flow takes a longer time to turn-off.  The inherent healing power of the Reiki energy and the client/patient’s inner healer know what’s best for each person.  I’ve been taught to honor the Reiki energy as well as my client’s healing journey, so I follow the clues given me by the Reiki energy when my clients request a ‘healing’ Reiki session.  It’s just that simple.

Reiki offers a plethora of healing advantages and the stress reduction benefits of Reiki is one that is touted quite often.  A Reiki session typically lasts 50-60 minutes and induces deep relaxation and a loving sense of peace and serenity.  Most people become so relaxed during their session they fall asleep as their built-up stress and anxiety is neutralized and released.

Reiki is something that needs to be experienced in order to be understood.  No words describing the experience even comes close to the reality of having experienced a Reiki session in person.  I can honestly say I’ve never had a client that has not experienced the stress reduction benefits of Reiki.
